  • Angelina Johnson, a former Gryffindor student, married George Weasley and had two children. Fans question why their marriage is controversial.
  • Angelina was popular at Hogwarts, excelling in Quidditch. She joined Dumbledore's Army and bravely fought in the Battle of Hogwarts.
  • The controversy stems from Angelina's previous relationship with Fred Weasley, who died in the Battle of Hogwarts. Some fans criticize the marriage as disrespectful to Fred's memory.

Fred and George Weasley are undoubtedly fan-favorite characters within the Harry Potter franchise, which made Fred’s tragic death during the Battle of Hogwarts an incredibly saddening and shocking moment in the franchise. George’s fate was omitted from the Deathly Hallows’ epilogue, leaving fans to question what happened to the beloved character after the events of the Second Wizarding War.

Although George’s future was uncertain for a number of years, it was ultimately revealed that George had married Angelina Johnson – a former Gryffindor student at Hogwarts. Together they had two children, a son named Fred (in honor of the late Fred Weasley), and a daughter named Roxanne. However, Harry Potter fans have often questioned who Angelina Johnson actually is, and why her marriage to George Weasley is deemed so controversial.

Who is Angelina Johnson?

As previously mentioned, Angelina is a fellow Gryffindor student who was in the same academic year group as Fred and George whilst Hogwarts. Although Angelina is largely a background character within the Harry Potter movies, her name frequently crops up throughout the original novels, as does her friendship with both Fred and George. During her time at Hogwarts, she was incredibly popular among her peers and undoubtedly earned a name for herself on the Quidditch Pitch.

Angelina played as Chaser for Gryffindor’s Quidditch team and had an exceptional talent for the wizarding sport. She played alongside Harry Potter during his first Quidditch game in which Gryffindor secured a victory against Slytherin. During Angelina’s seventh year, she was appointed the Quidditch Captain – a true testament to her sporting abilities.

Just like Ginny Weasley, Angelina resented how she was undermined on the Quidditch pitch by male players. When Oliver Wood was Quidditch Captain, Angelina would frequently call him out for referring to the players as ‘men’ or ‘lads’. Throughout the books, Quidditch is largely regarded as a ‘boy’s sport’, however Angelina strove to denounce this stereotype and advocated for more female Quidditch players – something which is woefully neglected from the movies.

In Angelina’s seventh year, she joined Dumbledore’s Army – a group assembled by Harry to rebel against Dolores Umbridge’s refusal to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts. During the group’s secretive meetings in the Room of Requirement, Harry would teach his peers crucial defensive spells, including the Patronus Charm and the Reductor Curse. Dumbledore’s Army was a hugely important organization. Without this group, students would’ve been unable to fight against Voldemort and his army of Death Eaters during the infamous Battle of Hogwarts – something which Angelina bravely participated in. Angelina’s involvement in both Dumbledore’s Army and the Battle of Hogwarts showcases her exceptional strength and courage, although her contribution is once again omitted from the movies.

Although the movies largely gloss over her character, Angelina appears in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire during the Yule Ball. As Harry Potter fans will know, the Yule Ball traditionally coincides with the Triwizard Tournament, and is typically associated with romance. However, Angelina does not attend the Yule Ball with George Weasley and instead attends as Fred’s date – something which led to the controversial reception of her later marriage to George.

Why is their marriage so controversial?

Although little is known about Angelina’s romantic relationship with Fred outside the Yule Ball, it’s widely assumed that the pair dated during their time at Hogwarts. Because of this, Angelina’s later marriage to George has been criticized by fans who dub their relationship as ‘distasteful’ and an insult to Fred’s memory. After all, it does appear rather controversial for Angelina to have married her dead boyfriend’s brother – something which some fans have dubbed as J.K Rowling’s ‘lazy writing’.

Despite the unconventionality of the pair’s marriage, other fans have suggested that Angelina and George’s relationship is logical in consideration of the couple’s shared grief after losing Fred. Due to her long-lasting friendship with both Weasley twins, Angelina was likely a valued companion for George after Fred’s death – one who empathized with his grief. In this train of thought, Angelina and George’s marriage ultimately makes sense, despite her previous relationship with Fred.

On the other hand, some fans have debated whether Fred and Angelina’s relationship even existed beyond the Yule Ball. Whilst it’s known that the pair had an enjoyable time together at the event, it’s unclear whether they went on to form a romantic relationship following the Ball. Although Angelina is often referred to as Fred’s ex-girlfriend, it’s more than likely that the pair didn’t actually date, making the controversy surrounding her later marriage to George ill-established.

Once more, even if the pair did date, they would’ve been around seventeen years old at the time of their relationship. Although it’s unclear exactly when Angelina and George did marry, it’s established to have been some time after the events of the Second Wizarding War, which somewhat quashes the controversy of their marriage.
